Just 24 hours after the formation of the new government in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur, the situation appears to be deteriorating once again. Fresh unrest in the state just 24 hours after the formation of the government

It is worth noting that Manipur has long been plagued by ethnic violence. Considering this, the central government had imposed President’s Rule in the state last year. Recently, after the lifting of President’s Rule, a new government was formed under the leadership of Yumnam Khemchand Singh, but just 24 hours after its formation, unrest has flared up again in the state.

Kuki MLAs warned not to participate in the formation of the state government

In Churachandpur, groups from the Kuki community took to the streets and warned their community’s MLAs not to participate in the formation of the state government. A complete shutdown was called in the district as part of the protest. Incidents of firing were also reported in several areas. The Joint Front 7 has announced a 12-hour shutdown in Kuki-Zo dominated areas.

In fact, there is widespread resentment within the Kuki-Zo community over the appointment of Nemcha Kipgen, an MLA from the Kuki-Zo community, as Deputy Chief Minister in the Khemchand government and the support of two other MLAs. These protests led to demonstrations in Churachandpur district, escalating tensions in the Tuibong area. The situation remained tense throughout the day, with fierce clashes between protesters and security forces. Additional security forces have been deployed across the region to prevent the situation from worsening.
