Manipur has suspended internet and mobile data services for five days in the territorial jurisdiction of five districts of the valley following widespread protests in Imphal East and Imphal West districts following the alleged arrest of a leader of the Meitei radical outfit ‘Arambai Tengole’.
Manipur Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home) N. Ashok Kumar in an order issued late Saturday night said, “In view of the prevailing law and order situation in the State of Manipur particularly in the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur, it is apprehended that some anti-social elements may extensively use social media for broadcasting pictures, hate speech and hateful video messages inciting public sentiments, which may have serious impact on the law and order situation in the State of Manipur.” The order said, “Inflammatory material and false rumours being circulated/disseminated to the public through messaging services on social media/mobile services, SMS services and dongle services are likely to result in damage to public, private property and loss of life and widespread disturbance of public peace and communal harmony.”
It said internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN services, have been suspended in the territorial jurisdiction of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur districts for five days from Saturday midnight. A complete curfew has been imposed in Bishnupur district.
The suspension of internet and mobile data services will not be effective for cases where the state government grants exemptions and allows white listing. The order said the order was being passed ex-parte in view of the emergency situation, adding that legal action would be taken against anyone found guilty of violating the above orders.
Earlier on Saturday night, protests broke out in parts of Imphal following the alleged arrest of a leader of the Meitei radical outfit Arambai Tengol.
The protesters burnt tyres and old furniture during the protest on a key road between Kwakeithel and Uripok in Imphal West district, demanding the immediate release of the leader. Additional security forces led by senior officials have been deployed in both Imphal East and Imphal West districts to bring the situation under control. Police officials are tight-lipped about the alleged arrest of the Arambai Tengol leader.
