President files police complaint, suspect arrested. Mexico’s first female president, Sheinbaum, said on Wednesday that she decided to file a police complaint after discovering that the same man had been harassing other women. Authorities later confirmed the man’s arrest.
“If this can happen to the president, what will happen to ordinary women?” Sheinbaum said at her morning press conference, “I think if I don’t file a complaint, what will happen to other Mexican women? If they can do this to the president, what will happen to all the women in our country?” She emphasized the need for strict action against sexual harassment.
The President further stated that the government would investigate whether this behavior is criminalized in all states. He said, “It should be criminalized everywhere, and we are going to launch a national campaign to address this.” Sheinbaum also explained that she herself had faced similar harassment in her youth. Only when I saw the video did I understand what had happened.” A complaint has been filed against the man with the Mexico City prosecutor’s office, where sexual harassment is punishable by law. Questions about security and social perceptions: This incident has raised questions about the president’s security arrangements. It has also intensified criticism of the “macho” attitudes prevalent in society that do not hesitate or normalize touching women’s private parts and other parts of their bodies.

According to a UN Women report, approximately 70 percent of women aged 15 and older in Mexico experience sexual harassment at least once in their lives.
