A dreaded gangster, who was serving life imprisonment on murder charges, escaped from Yerwada Central Jail in Pune, Maharashtra. Officials gave this information on Tuesday.

The gangster has been identified as Ashish Bharat Jadhav, jail tag C-949, who is originally from Maval and was arrested by the Warje-Malwadi police in connection with the murder of a man in 2008.

He was later sentenced to life imprisonment by a Pune court and was lodged in Barrack No. 4 in the YCJ Open Jail. Jadhav was ‘missing’ in the count of prisoners on Monday evening. He was searched at several places inside the YCJ campus, but when he was not found, officials concluded that he had ‘eloped’, and lodged a complaint at the nearby Yerwada police station.

An official said a search operation is being conducted in Pune city, Maval and other areas to nab Jadhav. The involvement of some insider or outsider in helping him escape is being ascertained.

Meanwhile, the YCJ has tightened security in and around its premises, especially the open jail and the historic jail complex, by monitoring the movement of all prisoners.
