Magnitude 7.0 earthquake hits Taiwan

A powerful earthquake rocked the entire region. The earthquake measured 7.0 magnitude. The strong tremors were felt late at night, when most people were asleep or preparing to sleep. The tremors shook even the skyscrapers, creating a panic among the people. Everyone started rushing out of their homes. The incident occurred in Taiwan, where a powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck late Saturday night, causing strong tremors in several areas, including the capital Taipei.

Earth Shakes at Midnight

The earthquake caused skyscrapers in Taipei to sway, spreading panic among the people. Taiwan’s Central Weather Agency (CWA) confirmed the earthquake. According to the weather agency, the earthquake struck at 11:05 PM in Yilan, a northeastern coastal city of Taiwan. Its epicenter was located approximately 32.3 kilometers east of the Yilan County Hall, while its depth was measured at 11.9 kilometers.

No Tsunami Threat

Taiwan’s National Fire Agency stated that an assessment of the damage has been conducted after the earthquake and there is no threat of a tsunami. The agency appealed to people to remain vigilant on the social media platform ‘X’. The fire agency advised people to prioritize their safety, stay away from dangerous objects, keep shoes and a flashlight near their beds, and only go outside after the tremors have stopped.

No Immediate Reports of Casualties or Damage

According to the Taipei administration, there are no immediate reports of casualties or major damage from the earthquake. Local media reported that tremors were felt throughout Taiwan, including the capital. There were also reports of supermarket shelves collapsing in some areas. The Taiwan Meteorological Department stated that this earthquake was recorded three days after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Taitung, a southeastern coastal county of Taiwan. The shock of 2024 comes to mind.

The latest earthquake tremors were felt in several parts of Taiwan, including Kaohsiung. It’s worth noting that in April 2024, Taiwan experienced a 7.4 magnitude earthquake, the strongest in the last 25 years. That earthquake killed at least 17 people and triggered landslides in several areas.
