Voting for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024 will take place on 19 April. In this, the general public will decide 102 seats in 21 states by voting. To vote, a voter must have a Voter ID Card. Voter ID, also known as Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC), is a photo identification card. It is issued by the Election Commission of India to all those who are eligible to vote. Apart from allowing voting, this card also acts as an identity card. But what if someone forgets to carry his voter ID card to the polling booth?
How to check name in voter list?
If a person wants to vote in the elections in India, he has to fulfill certain criteria. To vote, it is necessary that the person be an Indian citizen, an ordinary resident of the constituency and be 18 years of age or older. Along with this, it is also necessary that the person’s name is in the voter list (electoral list).
To know whether your name is in the voter list or not, you will have to go to https://electoralsearch.in/. If your name is not in the list then you will have to fill Form 6. Even if you are registering to vote for the first time, you will have to fill Form 6 and submit it to the Electoral Registration Officer of your constituency. After doing all this, your name will be registered as a voter in the voter list and you will get a voter ID card. Every voter also gets an EPIC number.
Can a person vote without Voter ID?
Before going to the polling station and casting your vote, you have to show the Voter ID card. This card is used while voting in municipal, state and national elections. The identity of voters is verified through Voter ID card so that no one person can vote for another person. But what if the voter ID card is lost at the time of elections or a person forgets to take the voter ID card to the polling station? Can one still vote?
According to the Election Commission, if someone has forgotten to take the Voter ID card to the polling station, he can still participate in the elections. According to the rules, apart from the Voter ID, there are other documents which can be shown at the polling station to get permission to vote. These documents are-
- Aadhar card
- PAN card
- Passport
- driving license
- Passbook with photo issued from bank-post office
- Smart card issued by RGI through NPR
- MNREGA job card
- Health Insurance Smart Card issued under the Central Government Scheme,
- service i card
- Pension document with photo
- Official ID card issued for MP-MLA and MLC
The thing to note in this is that if you have Voter ID card, Aadhar card or any valid identity card but your name is not in the voter list, then you cannot vote. To check your name in the voter list, you can use the SMS service of the Election Commission. In this you have to send SMS to number 1950 by writing ‘ECI (your EPIC number)’.
