BHU में बवाल, सुरक्षाकर्मियों और छात्रों के बीच पत्थरबाजी, पुलिस ने बरसाईं लाठियां
Late Tuesday night, heavy stone-pelting broke out between security personnel and students at Banaras Hindu University in Uttar Pradesh. Over 20 flower pots were broken at the intersection outside the LD Guest House. Police from several police stations arrived and chased the students back to their hostels. Tensions persisted on the campus for nearly two hours. More than 300 students were chased by 100 Proctorial Board security personnel and 50 police officers, but the stone-pelting did not stop.
It is reported that before the violence, some masked students were surrounding and assaulting another student. Security personnel arrived and apprehended them and handed them over to the Proctorial Board. Subsequently, several students emerged from the hostel and attacked the security personnel, leaving several guards with serious injuries to their hands and legs. Meanwhile, students alleged that security personnel lathi-charged them, injuring more than 10 students. They then left the hostel and began a sit-in protest outside the Vice Chancellor’s residence. The dispute escalated, and stone-pelting suddenly broke out. Angry students reached the LD Guest House intersection, broke decorative flowerpots, and chased each other.
The police had to use mild force to control the situation, and the situation has remained tense ever since. The incident began on Tuesday evening when a student from BHU’s Raja Ram Mohan Roy Hostel was injured in a bike accident. After the accident, he went to the university’s Proctorial Board to complain. It is alleged that instead of hearing his complaint, he was chased away. Upon learning of this, students from Raja Ram Mohan Roy Hostel, Birla Hostel, and several other hostels gathered and protested. It is alleged that Proctorial Board personnel lathi-charged the students, after which the agitated students resorted to stone pelting. The university administration called in the police to control the situation. A large police force has been deployed at the university.
This sparked a protest by students. Members of the BHU Disciplinary Committee arrived to speak to the students, but the agitated students refused to listen and began a ruckus. The police were then informed of the incident. Police arrived at the scene and attempted to control the situation, but the protesting students began pelting stones. Students allege that Proctorial Board guards scuffled with them, leading to the situation becoming tense. It’s worth noting that some VIP guests who came to participate in the Kashi Tamil Sangamam are staying at BHU’s LD Guest House. Therefore, the police are having to take special precautions.
