Continuous rains in north-east India have caused heavy destruction. A landslide occurred at an army camp in the northern region of Sikkim on Sunday, June 1, at around 7 pm. So far three people have died in this accident, while 9 soldiers are reported missing. The deceased have not been identified yet. Rescue operations are continuing to search for the missing soldiers.
Huge damage to nearby houses as well
The landslide was not limited to the army camp only, but many nearby houses have also been damaged. The debris that suddenly fell from the mountains has caused devastation in the area. Search operations are being carried out in the affected area so that people trapped in the debris can be safely evacuated.
More than 1500 tourists stranded
Due to continuous rains and landslides, about 1,500 tourists are stranded in tourist places like Lachen and Lachung in Sikkim. Mangan district SP Sonam Dechu Bhutia said that there are 115 tourists in Lachen and 1,350 in Lachung. The relief is that road connectivity to Lachung has now been restored and the process of evacuating tourists has been started.
Roads restored with the help of BRO
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) team has made the road passable again by removing the debris deposited by the landslide. They have also repaired the broken bridge in the Phidang area and the cracks near the suspension bridge. After this, a safe route has been prepared from Lachung to Shipjhere and Dikchu via Chungthang.
Cloudburst further worsened the situation
The cloudburst incident in North Sikkim on May 30 worsened the situation. During this time, more than 130 mm of rain fell, due to which the roads leading to major tourist destinations like Lachen, Lachung, Gurudongmar and Zero Point were badly damaged. Bridges broke down at many places, roads cracked and debris blocked the roads.
Administration and army on alert, relief work continues
Teams of local administration, army and BRO are engaged in relief and rescue operations. Search for missing soldiers, evacuation of stranded people and repair of broken roads have become priorities. At present, people are being appealed to avoid traveling to hilly areas and follow the instructions of the administration.
