Kolkata doctor murder case: IMA announces nationwide closure of non-emergency services on Aug 17

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Thursday announced that it will hold a meeting on August 17 Non-emergency services will remain closed across the country for 24 hours from 6 am on 06.00 am.

A postgraduate course in Kolkata’s Government R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Thursday announced a 24-hour non-emergency nationwide strike from 6 am on August 17 to protest the rape and murder of a trainee doctor and the subsequent vandalism of the crime scene by a mob. Services will remain closed.

The medical body said in a statement that essential services will continue and medical work will continue in the emergency ward as well. The IMA said that services in the outpatient department (OPD) will remain closed and elective surgeries will not be performed.

“In the aftermath of the heinous crime at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and the hooliganism committed by protestors on Independence Day eve (Wednesday night), the Indian Medical Association has called for a nationwide strike from 6 am on Saturday, August 17 to 6 am on Sunday,” the statement said. Allopathy doctors have announced a nationwide strike of services for 24 hours till 6 am on August 18.”

It said, ”Doctors, especially women, are vulnerable to violence due to the nature of their profession. It is the responsibility of the authorities to ensure the safety of doctors inside hospitals and premises.”

The IMA also condemned the vandalism at the Kolkata hospital.
