The parents of a student who was asked not to wear a hijab at a church-run school in Palluruthy, Kochi, Kerala, have decided to enroll their daughter in another institution.

The student’s wearing a hijab sparked controversy, forcing the school to be closed for two days.

The father of an eighth-grade student at St. Rita Public School told PTI on Friday that his daughter will not return to that school. “My daughter has been very stressed since the hijab incident. She clearly stated that she does not want to go there, so we have decided to respect her wishes,” he said.

The student’s father said they have contacted other schools for her admission. “We are in talks with one school that has agreed to admit her, but we are considering all available options,” he said.

He said neither the teachers nor the management of St. Rita School have contacted the family since the controversy began. He said, “My daughter has not gone to school for the last two days and we have not received any information from the school.”

The controversy began when the school objected to the student wearing a hijab, citing its dress code policy.

The student’s parents, along with others, visited the school on October 10 and questioned the management’s stance, following which the school declared a two-day holiday. The Kerala High Court later directed the school to provide police protection.

General Education Minister V. Sivankutty initially criticized the school but later said the matter had been resolved amicably.

He recently asked the school management to refrain from making any comments against the government and the education department.
