Kerala fire: Over 150 injured, 8 critical, in fireworks accident in Kasaragod

At least 154 people, eight of them in critical condition, have been injured in a firecracker attack at a temple in Kerala’s Kasaragod district. The incident took place at the Anjuttambalam Veerarakvu temple after midnight on Monday, when more than 1,500 people gathered at the temple to attend the traditional Theyyam festival. According to witnesses, the accident occurred when sparks from the firecrackers fell on other firecrackers kept in a room of the temple, causing an explosion.

One person is in critical condition and eight are seriously injured, according to officials. In total, 154 people were injured in the blast and subsequent stampede, with eight in critical condition. Of these, 97 are admitted to various hospitals. The temple management had reportedly kept around Rs 25,000 worth of light firecrackers for the festival, which was to end on Tuesday night.

The woman injured in the incident told how horrible the incident was

A young woman injured in the incident said that as soon as the sparks fell into the room, everyone started running. “I and some others fell and we got injuries, but my sister survived safely,” he said. Local MLA M.K. Rajgopal called the incident “extremely unfortunate” and spoke to the district collector. He said the firecrackers were light but the sparks fell on other firecrackers, causing the accident.

Kasargod MP Rajmohan Unnithan said the incident occurred after midnight when firecrackers were being fired to celebrate the festival. Two members of the temple committee have been taken into custody and police have launched an investigation into the incident. Sources said the temple management had not obtained a compulsory license for bursting firecrackers.
