The investigation into Sunday’s bomb blasts at Kerala’s Kalamassery Convention Center has revealed that an improvised explosive device (IED) planted in a tiffin box was used to carry out the blast. One person has died in the blasts, while 45 people have been injured. The condition of seven injured people is critical.

Sources have also confirmed that this was an act intended to create terror. About 2,000 people had gathered for prayers at the convention center at the time of the blast.
A four-member National Intelligence Agency (NIA) team from Kochi was at the spot. Sources confirmed that an NIA team from New Delhi has left for Kerala to take over the investigation. According to police, several explosions were reported from the location where a meeting of Jehovah’s Witness believers was held. The blast, which took place around 9 am, was sealed and the Kerala Police’s anti-terrorism squad was at the scene.
Jehovah’s Witnesses are a group of Christians who do not consider themselves Protestant. The Jehovah’s Witness convention is an annual gathering where larger gatherings, called regional conventions, are held over three days. According to sources, the event started last Friday and was to conclude on Sunday.
Sources said all the injured have been shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Kalamassery. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described the incident as “very unfortunate”. He underlined that all aspects will be examined in depth.CM Vijayan, who is attending his party’s meeting in Delhi, told state Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan has been deputed.
Vasavan reached the spot and told the media that it was a very unfortunate incident and the details of the blast were not yet known. CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan says that the bomb blast incident should also be seen from the terrorist angle. Police sources said that the deceased was a woman and her identity has not been known yet.
