The son of a Bharatiya Janata Party leader and his friends allegedly assaulted and abused a toll booth employee when asked to pay at a toll booth on the Vijayapura-Kalaburgi highway in Karnataka, police said on Friday.
The incident was recorded on CCTV and is being shared on social media platforms. Police said the incident reportedly occurred in Kannoli on Thursday. They said videos circulating on social media show Samarthgouda, son of BJP leader Vijugouda Patil, and his friends assaulting and abusing a toll booth employee.
According to police, Samarthgouda and his friends were traveling from Vijayapura to Sindgi in a vehicle. When they were stopped at the toll booth and asked to pay, Samarthgouda allegedly told the employee, “Do you know who I am? I am the son of BJP leader Vijugouda Patil.”
They said the employee allegedly asked, “Who is Vijugouda?” Samarthgouda and his friends assaulted and abused the employee, as seen in the video.
Other toll booth employees intervened and prevented the situation from escalating. Police said that toll employee Sangappa was injured in the incident and was taken to Sindgi Taluka Hospital.
A senior police officer said, “We have not yet received any complaint from the toll employees in this regard.”
The Karnataka Congress reacted to the incident. The party shared a photo of the incident on Instagram, writing, “The true face of BJP’s “culture”! A BJP leader’s son refuses to pay toll tax, beats up a toll employee, and the father defends him.”
The party further wrote, “Power-drunk arrogance, disregard for the law, feudal mentality, and criminal behavior are all evident in this one incident. This is no exception; this is the BJP’s DNA.”
