N. Puviarasu, director of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Bengaluru Centre, said that the ‘yellow alert’ issued on May 18 for some areas of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, will remain in effect for Monday and Tuesday as well.

The director said that the department is studying the current state of air circulation and will issue an updated weather information later. Puviarasu said, “According to the current state of cyclonic winds, there will be heavy rainfall in Karnataka, especially in coastal areas. Heavy rain is also expected in Bengaluru for the next two days.”

Bengaluru received heavy rains on Sunday, due to which many low-lying areas were submerged. The IMD has warned that amid the ‘yellow alert’, power supply may be temporarily disrupted in some areas, there may be minor traffic disruptions and weak trees and branches may be uprooted.

The Meteorological Department uses four colors to issue weather alerts in the country. These colours and their messages are… Green (no action needed), Yellow (keep an eye and keep monitoring), Orange (be prepared) and Red (action/assistance needed).

The IMD on Sunday issued a ‘yellow alert’ for heavy rains in 23 districts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, till Thursday.

The alert warns of moderate to heavy rains with thunder, lightning and strong winds at a speed of 50 to 60 kmph. Heavy rains with thunderstorms are expected throughout the week.

The affected districts include Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapura, Tumkuru, Mandya, Mysuru, Hassan, Kodagu, Belagavi, Bidar, Raichur, Yadgir, Davanagere and Chitradurga.

According to an alert issued by the IMD this morning, this change in weather has occurred due to cyclonic circulation in the upper air over parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu as well as the south-eastern Bay of Bengal. Along with this, a low pressure belt has formed from Telangana to North Tamil Nadu, which is drawing significant moisture and this is also the reason for heavy rains across South India.

According to the IMD bulletin, Bengaluru city alone received 103 mm of rain in the last 24 hours. Sai Layout in Horamavu, Bengaluru is one of the worst rain-affected areas so far. Due to the pre-monsoon rains, the layout was flooded with four to five feet of water.

According to some media reports, people blamed clogged drains for the waterlogging and claimed that the drains were not cleaned despite repeated complaints to the authorities.

Water also entered people’s homes in NC Colony located on Tannery Road. However, there is no report of anyone being injured due to this. In Jayanagar, heavy rains caused a tree to uproot and fall on a parked car and a jeep, damaging them. Some roads were temporarily closed due to waterlogging.
