The Karnataka government has given permission to candidates appearing for competitive and recruitment examinations to wear hijab during the examination. Karnataka Higher Education Minister MC Sudhakar has announced this. He has said that depriving students of exams just because they wear hijab is a violation of people’s rights. He said that permission to wear hijab was also given for the recently held NEET examination.

MC Sudhakar said, “Some people have a habit of raising objections on everything. It is a secular country. People have the right to wear clothes of their choice. I believe that those who are opposing this should read the manual of NEET exam. I don’t understand why they are making this an issue in the end.”

Sudhakar further said that students who want to wear hijab will have to reach the examination center at least an hour before the exam. They will be thoroughly investigated as we do not want any irregularities or use of unfair means in the examination.

It is believed that the same rule will be applicable in the recruitment examination in five corporations of Karnataka to be held on 28th and 29th October. Keep in mind that there was a lot of controversy in Karnataka over the wearing of hijab by girl students, when last year during the BJP ruled government, PU College, Udupi did not allow 6 girl students to enter the class.

On February 5, 2022, the previous BJP government of Karnataka had issued a notification banning the wearing of such attire which creates a situation of equality, integrity and law and order. This step of the government was considered to be focused on those girl students who wear hijab. A month later, the Karnataka High Court had justified the government’s decision, saying that wearing hijab is not an essential part of religious practices.

But after the Congress government came to power in the state in May last year, the party’s Muslim MLA Kaneez Fatima had said that the ban on hijab would be removed. Karnataka IT-BT Minister Priyank Khargone had also said that the decision to ban hijab will be reviewed.
