Former minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Malikayya Guttedar joined the Congress on Friday.

Malikayya Guttedar, a six-time MLA from Afzalpur in Kalaburagi district, was angry with his brother Nitin Guttedar joining the BJP.

In the 2023 assembly elections, Congress’s MY Patil had won the Afzalpur seat, in which Malikayya Guttedar stood third after Nitin. Nitin Guttedar had contested the elections as an independent.

Welcoming Malikayya Guttedar into the party, Deputy Chief Minister and Congress state unit chief DK Shivakumar claimed that many BJP leaders are keen to join the ruling party in the state.

Kalaburagi is the home district of Congress president M Mallikarjun Kharge, who had won the seat in the 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections, but lost in the 2019 elections.

Kharge’s son-in-law Radhakrishna Doddamani is contesting from Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) in this Lok Sabha election.
