This is the first time that the price of ATF in major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai has crossed the ₹2 lakh per kilolitre mark.

हवाई सफर पर महंगाई की मार, पहली बार ₹2 लाख प्रति किलोलीटर के पार, विमान ईंधन की कीमतें दोगुनी से ज्यादा महंगी

Amidst the widening scope of the conflict in West Asia and the resulting surge in global oil prices, the cost of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF)—or jet fuel—more than doubled on Wednesday, hitting a record high of ₹207,000 per kilolitre. This marks the first time that ATF prices have crossed the ₹200,000 per kilolitre (KL) mark.

In Delhi, the price of ATF has been hiked from ₹96,638.14 per kilolitre to ₹207,341.22 per kilolitre. Prior to this, on March 1, jet fuel prices had already seen a hike of 5.7 percent (₹5,244.75 per kilolitre).

ATF Prices Cross ₹200,000 Mark in Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai

State-run oil companies released the new ATF rates on Wednesday morning, reflecting a price hike of approximately 115% for domestic flights and about 107% for international flights. The continuous depreciation of the Rupee is also compounding the difficulties faced by airlines, as the majority of their operational expenses are denominated in US Dollars.

Regarding ATF prices for domestic flights, the cost of one kilolitre (1,000 litres) of fuel at the country’s busiest airport—Indira Gandhi International Airport—has been hiked by approximately 114.5%. This is the first instance where ATF prices in major metropolitan cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai have breached the ₹200,000 per kilolitre threshold.

Will Air Travel Become More Expensive?

At the country’s second-busiest airport—Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (Mumbai)—a hike of approximately 115% has been recorded in ATF prices. Here, the price surged from ₹90,451.87 per kilolitre to ₹194,968.67 in April.

This record-breaking surge in ATF prices is expected to have a direct impact on airfares, potentially placing an additional financial burden on passengers in the coming days.
