Japan issues tsunami warning after magnitude 8.0 earthquake

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Aomori Prefecture in Japan. The country’s meteorological agency has issued a tsunami warning for Aomori, Iwate, and Hokkaido prefectures.

A tsunami warning has been issued in Japan following a powerful earthquake. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Aomori Prefecture. The meteorological agency has issued tsunami warnings for Aomori, Iwate, and Hokkaido prefectures.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.6, struck off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture at approximately 11:15 PM on Monday, December 8, 2025. Following the quake, warnings were issued for the coastal areas of Aomori, Iwate, and Hokkaido prefectures. Residents in the affected areas have been advised to immediately move to safe, higher ground. Waves up to 3 meters high are expected along the coast of Iwate Prefecture, the central Pacific coast of Hokkaido, and the Pacific coast of Aomori Prefecture.

Meanwhile, waves of approximately 1 meter are expected along the coasts of Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, the Sea of ​​Japan coast of Aomori Prefecture, and the western and eastern Pacific coasts of Hokkaido.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake registered an intensity of Upper 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale in Hachinohe city, Aomori Prefecture. The JMA reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 50 kilometers and had a magnitude of 7.6.

Crisis Management Office established at the Prime Minister’s Office

According to local media, a tsunami wave of approximately 40 centimeters was recorded at Mutsu Ogawara port in Aomori Prefecture at 11:43 PM.
