This attack took place at an oil refinery on Lavan Island on Wednesday morning. Citing Iranian state television, the news agency AP reported that the attack occurred mere hours after the ceasefire announcement. Following this attack, Tehran also launched strikes against Kuwait and the UAE. Meanwhile, Iranian officials characterized the attack on the oil refinery as a hostile act by an enemy. According to officials, the attack took place despite the ceasefire agreement.
According to reports, the attack occurred at 10:00 AM local time. State television reported that firefighters have been deployed to the scene to extinguish the blaze. There are no reports of any casualties or property damage resulting from this incident. According to Iranian officials, it remains unclear who is responsible for the attack on the refinery. The attack took place immediately following the announcement of the ceasefire. Apart from this, the report did not provide any further details.
Missile and Drone Attacks in the Gulf Region
Meanwhile, there are also reports of missile and drone attacks within the territories of Gulf nations. In a statement, the UAE confirmed that sounds of explosions were heard across various parts of the country. These sounds were attributed to the interception of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones by the country’s air defense systems. The ministry stated that its air defense systems are currently actively engaging incoming missiles and drones originating from Iran.
According to the Kuwaiti military, its air defense systems have been intercepting drones launched from Iran since 8:00 AM. The Kuwaiti military reported that several drones targeted critical oil facilities, power stations, and desalination plants. This has resulted in significant damage to infrastructure. Kuwait’s Ministry of Defense stated that its air defense systems have successfully responded to intense hostile attacks launched by Iran. It was also reported that 28 drones were neutralized during this period.
Two Injured in Bahrain Attacks; Attack Occurs Hours After Ceasefire
Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior has shared information regarding alleged attacks attributed to Iran. Two people were injured in these incidents. These attacks occurred just hours after the U.S. announced a ceasefire with Iran. In a statement, the Ministry noted that two civilians sustained minor injuries in the Sitra area, and several homes were damaged. This damage resulted from falling shrapnel during the interception of an Iranian drone.
The AFP news agency reported that sounds of explosions were heard in Manama, the capital of Bahrain, during the morning hours. The agency stated that its journalists observed smoke rising from an area on Sitra Island—the very location housing Bahrain’s primary energy facilities. An earlier statement indicated that civil defense teams had successfully extinguished a fire at one of these facilities, which had been targeted in the Iranian attack.
Why is Lavan Island Crucial for Iran?
Iran’s Lavan Island is a strategically vital island situated in the Persian Gulf. It spans an area of approximately 78 square kilometers. Furthermore, Lavan serves as a major hub from which Iran exports large quantities of crude oil; it functions as a dedicated crude oil export terminal. Significant volumes of oil are refined at this location, which also encompasses the Lavan gas fields. The island is situated approximately 450 to 500 kilometers west of the Strait of Hormuz.
In light of the conflict that has been ongoing for the past forty days, the United States has announced a conditional ceasefire. Both parties—Iran and the U.S.—have reached a peace agreement pledging not to launch attacks against one another for the next two weeks.
U.S. Vice President Describes Agreement as “Fragile”
Meanwhile, while addressing university students in Hungary, the U.S. Vice President characterized the ceasefire as a “fragile” agreement. Additionally, he issued a warning to Tehran ahead of the talks scheduled to take place in Pakistan later this week. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance announced that Iran has agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz as part of a fragile ceasefire. President Trump had issued a warning: “Open Hormuz. Stop attempting to hold the global economy hostage. We will enforce a ceasefire.” This ceasefire agreement—reached just hours before Trump’s deadline—stipulates that, in exchange for Iran opening this strategic waterway, the United States and its allies will halt their attacks.
Vance stated that the United States has largely achieved its military objectives. This conflict will end soon. Trump had previously remarked that the Iranians are better negotiators than they are fighters. Vance noted that while Iran’s Foreign Minister has responded positively to the U.S. terms, certain elements within the Iranian establishment are spreading falsehoods on social media. If Iran fails to engage in negotiations, the United States possesses alternative options; other instruments remain available in our toolkit—tools that have not yet been utilized. If both parties act in good faith, an agreement can be reached.
