The Indian Premier League (IPL) was postponed indefinitely on Friday due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan.
Uncertainty loomed over the future of the ongoing IPL after Thursday’s match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was called off midway following air strike warnings in Jammu and Pathankot.
Confirming the suspension of the league, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official told PTI, “It doesn’t look good if cricket continues when the country is at war.”
After the Dharamsala match was called off, several Australian players involved in the league had raised concerns over their safety. The BCCI arranged a special train to ferry the Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals teams, match officials, commentators, broadcast staff and other essential personnel to a safe place.
The league was scheduled to conclude in Kolkata on May 25.
After the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, India carried out precision strikes targeting nine major terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). In response to this, Pakistan tried to target some military bases in Northern and Western India on 7-8 May, to which the Indian Army gave an appropriate and effective response.
