India’s 1st all-woman police station inaugurated by Indira Gandhi celebrates 50 years

Kerala Police takes pride in claiming on its website that this police station is the first police station in Asia for women.

Celebrations are being held for 10 days at the country’s first women’s police station in Kozhikode, Kerala. This police station was inaugurated 50 years ago by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. After this the PM gave a pen to the first sub-inspector of the station, M Padminiamma, to sign the inaugural register. It’s been 50 years now. Kerala Police takes pride in claiming on its website that this police station is the first police station in Asia for women.

The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi inaugurated the police station in 1973 and was accompanied by the then Governor N.N. Wanchoo, Chief Minister C. Achyuta Menon and Home Minister K. Karunakaran was present. While all these personalities are history, the first police sub-inspector M Padminiamma, now retired, is living a peaceful life in the state capital.

An anecdote related to the first case registered soon after the inauguration of the station was the case of a missing boy, RL Baiju, who is today a judge in the Family Court. The current sub inspector at the station is K.K. Everyone is happy with the attention Tulsi is getting, and they say it is a 10-day celebration.

Tulsi said, “Today is the last day of the celebration and we all have enjoyed it. Most of the cases we are getting are related to domestic issues as this is an all-women police station and women can come to us freely. They come to us and talk openly.”
