London: West Midlands Police have issued an urgent public appeal to trace a white male suspect following the racially motivated rape of a 20-year-old woman, believed to be of Indian origin, in Walsall, northern England.
West Midlands Police received reports of a woman in distress on the street in the Park Hall area of Walsall on Saturday evening. Police have released CCTV footage of the suspect and are investigating the crime as a racially motivated attack.
“A very horrific attack on a young woman”
Detective Superintendent (DS) Ronan Tyrer, who is overseeing the West Midlands Police investigation, said on Sunday, “This was a very horrific attack on a young woman and we are making every effort to arrest the person responsible.”
He said, “We have teams of officers gathering evidence and developing a profile of the attacker so he can be detained as soon as possible. While we are currently conducting a number of investigations, it is essential that we speak to anyone who saw a suspicious person in the area at the time.”
He added, “You may have been passing through the area and have dashcam footage, or you may have CCTV that we haven’t yet received. Your information could provide vital clues.”
Identification of the Attacker
The attacker is described as white, in his 30s, with short hair, and wearing dark clothing at the time of the attack. While police have yet to confirm further details, local community groups have claimed the victim is a Punjabi woman and have expressed concern, as this latest attack comes just weeks after the racially aggravated rape of a British Sikh woman in the nearby Oldbury area.
DS Tyrer said in a statement, “At this time, we are not linking this attack to any other crime.” Specialist officers from the force’s Public Protection Unit, local police officers, and forensic officers are working to recover CCTV camera footage, speak to witnesses, and identify the suspect.
Walsall Police Chief Superintendent Phil Dolby said his team is focused on assisting investigators in identifying and arresting the attacker. He said, “Walsall is a diverse area, and we know the fear and anxiety this horrific attack will cause in our communities. We are speaking to members of the community today to listen to and understand their concerns, and there will be an increased police presence in the coming days.”
Incident in Walsall
Sikh Federation UK, citing local sources, reported that the victim of the racially aggravated rape in Walsall is a Punjabi woman. The organization said, “The attacker broke down the door of the house where she was staying.” West Midlands Police have investigated two racially aggravated rapes of women in their 20s in the past two months and need to immediately apprehend those responsible.
Police have made a number of arrests before releasing suspects on bail in the investigation into the racially aggravated rape of a British Sikh woman in Oldbury last month.
