The new financial year has begun with a jolt of inflation. Prices for commercial LPG cylinders have been hiked due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Driven by a surge in international crude oil prices, state-run oil companies have announced a steep increase of ₹195.50 in the cost of commercial LPG cylinders. These new rates, effective since Wednesday, have heightened concerns among traders and restaurant operators.

According to state-run oil companies, the price of a 19-kilogram commercial LPG cylinder in Delhi now stands at ₹2,078.50. Prior to this, on March 1, the price of the 19-kilogram cylinder had already been raised by ₹114.50.

The price of a commercial gas cylinder, which stood at ₹1,768.50 on March 1, rose to ₹1,883 on March 7. Following that increase, the price has now gone up by another ₹195.50 to reach ₹2,078.50. This translates to a cumulative increase of ₹310 since March 1. According to reports, effective today, the price of a 19-kilogram LPG cylinder is ₹2,208.00 in Kolkata, ₹2,031.00 in Mumbai, and ₹2,246.50 in Chennai.

However, there has been no change in the prices of domestic cooking gas (LPG). The price of domestic LPG was last hiked on March 7, when the cost of a 14.2-kilogram cylinder was raised by ₹60. Prices have remained unchanged since then. In Delhi, the price of a 14.2-kilogram domestic cylinder is currently ₹913.

The hike in commercial gas cylinder prices is expected to have a direct impact on the common man’s pocket, as hotel and restaurant operators may pass on the increased costs by raising the prices of food and beverages. This implies that dining out or eating at hotels could become more expensive. State-owned oil companies—such as Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum—revise the prices of ATF (Aviation Turbine Fuel) and LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) on the first of every month, based on international benchmarks and exchange rates. Global oil prices have surged by approximately 50 percent following disruptions to the energy supply chain caused by the conflict in West Asia.

Since the ₹2 per liter reduction in petrol and diesel prices in March of last year, their rates have remained stable; currently, the price of petrol in Delhi stands at ₹94.72 per liter, while diesel is priced at ₹87.62 per liter.

Indeed, the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States has exacerbated the global energy crisis. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is causing disruptions in the supply of natural gas and crude oil. Consequently, crude oil prices are skyrocketing. Many countries across the globe have witnessed a massive surge in the prices of gas and petroleum products. In India, the price of LPG has already been hiked twice amidst the ongoing conflict.
