India-Nepal border to shut briefly on July 24 and 28 for Uttarakhand panchayat polls

Nepal-India border posts in Baitadi and Darchula districts will remain temporarily closed on July 24 and 28 in view of the upcoming panchayat elections in Uttarakhand. Officials gave this information on Wednesday. Panchayat elections in Uttarakhand are scheduled to be held in two phases on July 24 and July 28.

Baitadi Chief District Officer Punya Bikram Paudel said that due to the upcoming panchayat elections in the neighboring Indian state, it has been decided to close the border posts in Baitadi and Darchula on July 24 and July 28.

Officials said that this decision has been taken to ensure security and maintain law and order during the elections in the Indian border area.

Baitadi Chief District Officer Paudel said that although the border crossings will remain closed for only two days, the Pulghat post in Darchula district will remain closed from the evening of July 21 to the morning of July 24. Apart from this, Jhulaghat post in Baitadi will remain closed from the evening of July 25 to the morning of July 28.

He said that in case of emergency, the check posts can be opened temporarily with mutual consent between the officials of the two countries.
