India mourned the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Iranian Embassy in Delhi lowered its flag to half-mast following the death of Ali Khamenei.

He was assassinated in Israeli and American attacks. On behalf of the Indian government, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri signed a condolence book at the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi on Thursday and paid tribute to the late Supreme Leader of Iran.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri conveyed a message of condolences to the Iranian Ambassador to New Delhi on behalf of the Indian government. Misri visited the Iranian Embassy and signed the condolence book on behalf of the Indian government. The Ministry of External Affairs also released a photograph of the conversation between the Foreign Secretary and Iranian Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali.

Khamenei was assassinated in the Israeli-American attack on February 28. Although India has called for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the West Asian crisis, it has not commented on Khamenei’s assassination. Misri’s visit to the Iranian Embassy and signing of the condolence book is significant because several opposition parties criticized the government’s lack of response to Khamenei’s death.

Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi said two days ago, “The assassination of a sitting head of state amid ongoing diplomatic talks signals a terrible breakdown in contemporary international relations. But beyond this shocking incident, New Delhi’s silence is also surprising. The Indian government has neither condemned the assassination nor the violation of Iran’s sovereignty.”

The former Congress president said, “Ignoring the US-Israeli comprehensive attack, the Prime Minister limited himself to condemning Iran’s retaliatory attack on the United Arab Emirates and did not mention the events that preceded it. Later, he expressed “deep concern” and spoke of “dialogue and diplomacy,” while this process was ongoing before the comprehensive, unprovoked attacks by Israel and the US.”

She said, “When our country does not explicitly defend sovereignty or international law and impartiality is abandoned when it comes to the targeted killing of a foreign leader, it raises serious questions about the direction and credibility of our foreign policy. Silence is not neutrality.”
