Amidst the growing tension with Pakistan, the central government has issued orders to the states and union territories to conduct mock drills. According to the Union Home Ministry, it will be organized on May 7, i.e. tomorrow. During this, citizens will be given training to survive during an attack. This mock drill will be conducted in 244 identified districts. Its purpose is to prepare better for civil defense. The last mock drill in the country was conducted in 1971.

Loud sound warning system

War sirens sound loud

They can be heard up to a range of 2-5 kilometers

It makes a sound of 120-140 decibels

The sound has a cyclic pattern

The sound gradually increases and then decreases

In which districts will the drill be conducted?

This mock drill will be conducted in 244 civil defense districts. Until the declaration of Emergency in 1962, the government’s civil defence policy was limited to making the states and union territories aware of the need for civil defence measures, asking them to keep civil defence paper plans ready for major cities and towns under the then Emergency Relief Organisation Scheme. After this, the Civil Defence Act 1968 was passed by Parliament in May 1968.

The Civil Defence Act, 1968 is applicable throughout the country. Yet the organisation has been set up only in such areas and zones which are considered strategically and tactically sensitive from the point of view of enemy attack. And mock drills have been planned in those 244 districts only. These districts are connected to the India-Pakistan border, which includes districts of states like Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab. At the same time, there are also some sensitive towns which have been converted into civil defence districts.

The objective of civil defence is to save lives, minimise loss of property, maintain continuity of production and keep the morale of the people high. Civil Defence Organization plays an important role during war and emergency, in which it protects internal areas, provides assistance to armed forces, and organizes citizens.
