India battles monsoon mayhem, J&K death toll rises to 41

So far 41 people have lost their lives in the devastation caused by heavy rains in Jammu. The Shrine Board has taken the responsibility of delivering the bodies to their families.

Jammu and Kashmir: Some roads have caved in, some bridges have been washed away and some villages have been submerged in water. The situation is such that a 115-year-old record has been broken. The torrential rains in Jammu and Kashmir for the last few days have caused terrible devastation. Many districts of the state are in the grip of floods, while many have lost their lives in incidents like landslides and cloudbursts.

The death toll may increase further

At the same time, the number of devotees dying in the landslide on the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route is continuously increasing. The accident happened on Tuesday afternoon at around 3 pm where there was a huge crowd of devotees on the Vaishno Devi route, when suddenly debris and large stones started falling from the hill near Ardhkumwari, which created panic among the devotees. Many devotees got buried under the stones, due to which they died.

The most affected areas

The most affected areas include Jammu city, RS Pura, Samba, Akhnoor, Nagrota, Kot Bhalwal, Bishnah, Vijaypur and Kathua. Apart from this, Udhampur, Doda, Reasi, Ramban and Poonch districts have also suffered due to heavy rains and landslides.

IMD alert

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rains and thunderstorms for the next few days. The administration has appealed to the people to stay away from low-lying areas and take shelter in safe places.

34 devotees have died in the landslide on the Mata Vaishno Devi route, more than 23 people are injured and the worrying thing is that the death toll may increase further.

41 people died in the last two days

At the same time, 41 people have lost their lives in Jammu in the last 24 hours. The situation on the Vaishno Devi Yatra route is currently critical, so the Yatra has been postponed. Army and CRPF personnel are engaged in rescue operations. In view of heavy rains, all schools have been kept closed till further orders.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced a compensation of Rs 6 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident, Rs 1 lakh to the seriously injured and Rs 50,000 to those who were slightly injured. Heavy rains have been falling in Jammu for the last several hours due to which the Jhelum river as well as Chenab and Tawi rivers are in spate. The flood is so severe that bridges are collapsing amidst the movement of vehicles. Roads have been submerged and vehicles are floating in water.

Rescue operation continues amid heavy rains

Flood alert has been issued in South Kashmir due to the water level of Jhelum river being above the danger mark.

Apart from this, many areas including Jammu city, Samba, Akhnoor, Nagrota, Kathua, Udhampur are badly affected.

The agencies engaged in rescue operations have so far shifted more than 3500 people to safe places in Jammu.

Rescue camps and relief camps have been set up in the entire district.

Heavy rain alert today too

Nature is wreaking havoc in Jammu and Kashmir at this time. Houses, shops, farms and barns are all in the grip of flood devastation. The problem is that even today a heavy rain alert is issued in the state and people have been advised not to go out of the house unnecessarily.
