Olympic bronze medalist wrestler Sakshi Malik on Monday ruled out a return to competitive wrestling, saying she is mentally exhausted after the prolonged protests against former national federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for alleged sexual harassment.
In December last year, after Sanjay Singh, a close aide of Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, was elected president of the Kashti Federation of India (WFI) in the elections, Sakshi had announced her retirement from wrestling in a tearful press conference.
She along with Olympic bronze medalists Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat have been protesting for months demanding the removal and arrest of Brij Bhushan Singh.
“It has been more than a year, there is so much mental pressure and we are trying to make this protest successful in every possible way,” Sakshi Malik said at a panel discussion on the impact of the ‘Me Too’ movement in India. I am trying to make it so I won’t be able to continue wrestling. ,
She said, “I got an Olympic bronze medal for India and I want my juniors to win silver and gold medals. I would like to see every girl in India achieving her dream. ,
Sakshi said, “Many people advised me to continue wrestling but I do not want to wrestle among people like Brij Bhushan. It feels bad when you see such people roaming in the open. Looks like he’s still in control of things. ,
He said, “I have not only heard these incidents but have personally experienced harassment. I left wrestling but the young wrestlers are hopeful that our campaign will remove people like Brij Bhushan. We did whatever we could. ,
Sakshi said, “I once again request the government not to allow people associated with it to come into wrestling administration. I will always remain positive. I hope for a positive result.
