Hindi writer and critic Virendra Yadav passed away at the age of 76

Virendra Yadav translated John Hersey’s book ‘Hiroshima’ from English into Hindi. He is particularly known for his insightful writings on debates surrounding Premchand and his contributions to the discourse on the 1857 rebellion.

Renowned Hindi critic and writer Virendra Yadav passed away on Friday due to cardiac arrest. He had been unwell for several days. He breathed his last at his residence in Indira Nagar.

Virendra Yadav was born in 1950 in Jaunpur district. He remained actively involved in literary criticism throughout his life. He earned his Master’s degree in Political Science from Lucknow University. He began actively participating in leftist intellectual and cultural activities during his student days.

Virendra Yadav served as the secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Progressive Writers’ Association for a long period. He was also the editor of the magazine ‘Prayojan’.

Virendra Yadav translated John Hersey’s book ‘Hiroshima’ from English to Hindi. He was particularly known for his insightful writings on debates surrounding Premchand and his contributions to the discourse on the 1857 rebellion.

Several of his articles have been translated and published in English and Urdu. His monograph focusing on the novel ‘Raag Darbari’ is included in the M.A. curriculum of Indira Gandhi National Open University, Delhi. In the field of criticism, he was awarded the ‘Devishankar Awasthi Samman’ in 2001.
