The Himachal Pradesh government announced a ban on cutting of hills for construction except reconstruction of disaster-affected buildings and roads. This restriction has currently been imposed till September 16, which can be extended further also.
Similarly, new planning permission or building permission for commercial or tourism units will also be banned in Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, Solan and Chamba districts during this period, an official statement said.
The monsoon season has witnessed unprecedented environmental disruptions across the state, including devastating landslides, land subsidence, breaching of river embankments and severe erosion. This has caused tragic loss of life and properties. A government spokesperson told the media that the ban is intended to ensure the safety of human life, infrastructure, preserve the fragile ecological environment and limit any such damage in the future.
The spokesperson said violations will be dealt with as per law.
