Heavy rain alert in Kerala, Malappuram, Palakkad and Idukki

Extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Kerala until October 22. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to strong winds in the Arabian Sea. According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rainfall is expected in Malappuram, Palakkad, and Idukki.

Heavy rains have been occurring in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala for the past three days. Tamil Nadu is the worst affected. On Tuesday, the state received 11.7 mm of rainfall. Flood-like conditions prevailed in Thoothukudi for the third consecutive day. Furthermore, flood-like conditions have developed in many areas of Chennai, with waterlogging in several areas, making it difficult to navigate the roads.

The Chennai airport runway was also flooded yesterday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the rains are due to a low pressure over the southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep. An orange alert has been issued for six districts in the state, with today being the second day of the alert.

The IMD stated that rainfall has been occurring in Kerala and Lakshadweep since Sunday. Coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are also expected to receive heavy rainfall over the next seven days. Bengaluru is expected to experience heavy rain from October 22nd to 25th, and the Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for this.

Heavy rains kill one in Kerala

An orange alert was issued in Kerala on Monday following heavy rains in Idukki, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts. One person died in floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in Idukki district on Sunday.

Several roads and 50 houses were submerged in water in Vazhikkadavu, Malappuram. Traffic on the Gudalur-Kozhikode road was also affected. Water levels in the Karakkodam, Kalakkad, and Atithode rivers in the district have risen rapidly.

The IMD reported that heavy rains have been occurring in Lakshadweep since Sunday. Coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are also expected to receive heavy rainfall over the next seven days.

Rainfall for the next seven days

In its October 19 weather report, the IMD issued a rain alert for Kerala, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, and southern Karnataka for the next seven days. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, coastal Karnataka, Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Telangana may also experience rain and thunderstorms.

The Meteorological Department has predicted rainfall ranging from 64 to 111 mm in Erode, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Karaikal, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, and Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu.

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning that winds of 35 to 45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, are likely along the Kerala and Karnataka coasts. High waves are expected, so fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.
