“My family does not need money. All they want is for me to return to the village.” Imran Ali, a migrant laborer from Bihar, left Gurugram out of fear after the violence on 31 July. Ali (25) had returned to Gurugram two weeks after the violence to collect his belongings.

Ali said, “My family told me not to work in Gurugram and to return immediately. Even after much persuasion, they did not agree and asked me to return immediately.

Religious riots broke out in Nuh on 31 July, in which six people were killed and 88 were seriously injured. Religious riots broke out after stones were pelted during a religious procession organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Nuh district.

A Muslim resident of Nuh, whose house was bulldozed, said he had long realized that the BJP’s religious rhetoric would lead to riots and target Muslims.

He said on the condition of anonymity, “Most Hindus believe that the people of Nuh were involved in the riots, which is not true. Like Hindus, we Muslims are equally Indians.

He recalled how Hindus had used foul language against Muslims during the yatra. Nuh police have so far taken 230 people into custody while Gurugram police have arrested 79 people in connection with the religious riots.

“Hindu groups are openly spreading hatred against us. Among hundreds of people, Hindu groups are declaring to boycott Muslims, not to buy anything from our shops and not to rent houses. They have ruined our business and hundreds of Muslims have left Gurugram.”

While leaving the city, Ahmed Khan said, “However, some of them will return once the situation becomes normal. Police and administration have completely failed to protect Muslims in their own country.”

“Hindus think that everything in this country belongs to them: the police, the administration and now even the roads. Khan said, it seems as if we Muslims have no rights in this country.

After the riots broke out, Muslim slums and junk shops were set on fire in Gurugram. The mob also targeted an under-construction mosque in Gurugram’s Sector-57 and attacked five people, killing an imam and injuring others.
