The body of Y. Puran Kumar, a senior Haryana cadre IPS officer and Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), was found in his official residence in Chandigarh on Tuesday. Initial investigations revealed that he committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver.

The incident occurred in the morning at his residence in Sector 11. Upon hearing gunshots, the household staff alerted the police. A forensic team and senior officers arrived at the scene and began an investigation. According to officials, Puran Kumar’s body was found in the basement of his residence, which had been made soundproof.

Police sources said that he had borrowed the revolver from his gunman on Monday. His daughter found him dead in the basement on Tuesday morning, after which the police were informed.

His wife, Amneet P. Kumar, a senior Haryana cadre IAS officer, was not at home at the time of the incident. She is currently on a visit to Japan with a delegation led by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. Amneet Kumar is currently serving as Secretary, Commissioner, Department of Foreign Cooperation. According to reports, she will return to India on Wednesday morning.

Puran Kumar was a respected officer of the Haryana Police Service. During his career, he held many important positions in the state police. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through both the Haryana Police and the administrative services.

Senior officials have expressed deep grief over the incident. Police have registered a case of suicide and are investigating all possible angles.
