The state government has taken action to kill more than 6,700 birds en masse as an emergency preventive measure after bird flu was confirmed in a poultry farm in Puri district of Odisha. A senior official gave this information on Sunday.
According to the official, the state government took the decision to kill the birds on a large scale after the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal confirmed the presence of H5N1 avian influenza virus in samples collected from Bada Ankula village of Delanga block of the district.
He said that more than 6,700 birds were killed on Saturday and Sunday following the standard operating procedure (SOP) laid down by the Center.
Puri Chief District Veterinary Officer (CDVO) Sharat Kumar Behera said that five rapid response teams (RRTs) along with the health team have been deployed in the area where bird flu cases have been found.
“We have completely restricted the movement of live birds in and out of the infected area,” he said.
After completing the culling of birds within a one-km radius of the village, samples have been collected from five other villages to test for the virus, Behera said.
Sources said unusual poultry deaths were reported in the village last week but the infection was officially confirmed from samples collected on July 9.
Meanwhile, Odisha’s Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Malik visited the affected area to review the precautionary measures and prevent the spread of the virus.
