Alaa al-Saadi of Diyala provincial command told Xinhua news agency on Thursday that unidentified gunmen opened heavy fire on a car in a village near the town of Wajihiya, about 90 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
Al-Saadi said 11 people were killed and nine others were injured in the twin attacks on cars, five of them in critical condition, Xinhua news agency reported. The ethnically mixed Diyala province has been plagued by unrest and sporadic violence between the Kurdish, Sunni and Shia communities in the years since 2003.
