Firing broke out on Sunday morning between rural volunteers of two communities in Imphal West district, hit by caste violence in Manipur. The incident occurred when several armed men from the neighboring hilly area in Kangpokpi district started indiscriminate firing on Kautruk village on the periphery of Imphal Valley, a police official said.
He said that there are reports of walls of villagers’ houses being damaged by some bullets. Women, children and elderly people are being taken to nearby safe areas. He said that locally made mortar shells ‘Pampi’ are being fired at the village which has created fear among the villagers.

Since the caste violence in Manipur started on May 3 last year, there have been reports of firing between village volunteers from two warring communities in Kautruk village. It has been identified as one of the most vulnerable locations for gun attacks.
More than 200 people have died and thousands have been rendered homeless in ethnic violence between the Meiteis, who live in the Imphal Valley, and the Kukis, who live in the neighboring hill region, since May 3 last year.
