Government prohibits circulation of videos, images depicting violence

The order states that if any person has such photos or videos, he should contact the SP and submit them for legal action, but if they are found sharing such photos through social media, then action will be taken against them. Case will be registered.

The state BJP government has failed on almost every front to calm the violence that has been raging in Manipur for the last 5 months. Now the state government has issued a new order. According to the order, action will be taken against those who share videos or photos of violence on social media anywhere in the state. A ban has been imposed on sharing any such content. The state government said in its order that it will register a case and prosecute those circulating pictures and videos of the violence. Besides, a decision has been taken to continue the ban on mobile internet service for another 5 days.

An order of the Governor issued through the state Home Department said that the state government takes photos and videos of violent activities very seriously and with utmost sensitivity. Due to sharing such thing, crowd can gather again and there can be loss of government property and life. This may worsen the law and order situation in the state.

The order states that if any person is in possession of such photographs or videos, he should contact the nearest Superintendent of Police and submit them for legal action, but if they are found sharing such photographs through social media, then A case will be registered against him.

Three days ago, the video of a Kuki-Jomi person being burnt had gone viral on social media and WhatsApp. After this the state government has taken this decision. Action will be taken under IT Act and IPC.

The state government has also decided to suspend mobile internet services in the state for the next 5 days. Earlier, in an order on October 6, the internet ban in violence-hit Manipur was extended till October 11. Now this restriction will remain in force till October 16.

Violence broke out in Manipur on May 3 during a tribal solidarity march by the Christian Kuki community in areas bordering Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts. More than 5 months have passed, but the situation in the state does not seem to be improving. So far 175 people have lost their lives in the violence. 50 thousand people have been displaced.
