Government imposes 40% export duty on onion to improve local supplies

Prices of many vegetables including onions, potatoes and tomatoes have been skyrocketing in the last few weeks. The central government has decided to reduce the price of tomatoes to Rs 40 per kg from August 20 in Nfed and NCCF outlets.

In a bid to rein in rising onion prices, the government on Saturday announced a 40 per cent duty on its exports. The notification issued states that this levy has come into effect immediately and will remain effective till 31 December 2023.

In the last few weeks, the prices of many vegetables including onion, potato and tomato have been skyrocketing. The central government has decided to reduce the price of tomatoes to Rs 40 per kg from August 20 in Nfed and NCCF outlets.

Announcing the decision on Friday, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs said that since July 14, more than 15 lakh kg of tomatoes have been procured by Nfed and NCCF for sale at cheap prices.

In the past one month, tomatoes have been sold at subsidized rates by both the agencies across the country in places like Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Retail inflation also picked up in July and reached 7.44 percent due to higher food prices. Food inflation stood at 11.51 percent.
