Two people died while six others were rescued in critical condition after a fire broke out in the store room of a popular sweet shop in Durgapur in West Bengal’s Burdwan district on Monday.
These deaths occurred due to gas leakage from an LPG cylinder, which was kept in the same storeroom. Two bodies were recovered on Monday morning while six others were rescued in critical conditions.
Both the deceased persons have been identified as Bidhan Mandal (21) and Atanu Ruidas (22). All the deceased and injured are residents of Beliatore in Bankura district of West Bengal.
Local police sources said the accident probably happened sometime between late Sunday night and Monday morning.
A local police officer said, “One of the employees had sent an SOS call to the sweet shop owner, before falling unconscious. The owner reached the spot and found that the door of the store room was locked from inside and there was no response even after repeatedly knocking on the door.
After this the owner broke the door with the help of his associates and also informed the local police station. Two bodies were recovered and six others were shifted to hospital.
Preliminary investigation revealed that gas leakage in a poorly ventilated store room was the main cause of the accident.
