Flood situation is serious in many states including Assam and Uttarakhand, alert issued

CWC has advised the local administration and residents to remain vigilant on the banks of rivers. Instructions have been given to speed up relief and rescue operations in flood-affected areas. People have been appealed not to go near the rivers and stay in safe places.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) issued a bulletin due to dangerous rise in water level of rivers in many states of the country. According to the bulletin issued at 6:39 am on August 6, many rivers in Assam, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal are flowing above the danger mark, posing a serious threat of floods.

The Dhaleshwari river (Gharmura) in Assam’s Hailakandi district was at 29.74 metres at 6:00 am, which is 1.69 metres above the danger mark (28.05 metres). The Katakhal river (Matijuri) in the same district is flowing at 20.73 metres, which is 0.46 metres above the danger mark (20.27 metres). The Buridehing river (Margarita) in Tinsukia district is at 134.55 metres, which is slightly above the danger mark (134.42 metres). The water level of these rivers is rising rapidly, due to which the local administration has been advised to remain alert.

The Ganga river is flowing above the danger mark in many districts of Bihar. The Ganga is at 60.85 meters in Buxar, 51.92 meters in Danapur, Patna, 51.1 meters in Dighaghat, 49.87 meters in Gandhighat, and 42.74 meters in Hathidah, all of which are above the danger mark. The water level of the Ganga is also in critical condition in Bhojpur, Bhagalpur and Khagaria. Apart from this, tributary rivers like Baya, Budhi Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati, Punpun, and Dhardha have also crossed the danger mark. The Kosi river (Baltara) is flowing at 34.81 meters in Khagaria and 30.73 meters in Katihar, increasing the risk of floods.

The Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers are in critical condition at Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand. Alaknanda (Rudraprayag) is at 627.6 metres and Mandakini (Gaurikund) at 1976.8 metres. Banganga at Haridwar and Bhagirathi river in Tehri Garhwal are also above the danger mark. Ganga at Sahebganj in Jharkhand is flowing at 27.74 metres, 0.49 metres above the danger mark.

Sindh river at Datia in Madhya Pradesh, Ganga at Badaun and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Ganga (Farakka) at Murshidabad in West Bengal are flowing above the danger mark. Ganga at Murshidabad is at 23.04 metres, 0.79 metres above the danger mark.

The CWC has advised the local administration and residents to remain vigilant along the rivers. Instructions have been given to expedite relief and rescue operations in flood-affected areas. People have been appealed not to go near the rivers and stay in safe places.
