The Gujarat High Court on Thursday sentenced four police officers involved in the beating of several Muslim men in Kheda a year ago to 14 days in jail and also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on each. However, accepting the defence’s plea, the court suspended the execution of the sentence for three months, giving the convicts time to appeal.
High Court A.V. Parmar, D.B. Contempt proceedings were initiated against four policemen identified as Kumawat, Laxmansingh Kanaksingh Dabhi and Rajubhai Dabhi. The court’s final decision states that the guilty police officers will report to the Judicial Registrar of the Gujarat High Court within a period of ten days after receipt of the order. However, the sentence has currently been stayed for a period of three months to allow for an appeal.
Justice A S Supahiya expressed the court’s disappointment, noting the court’s reluctance to imprison law enforcement officials. A division bench of Justice Supehiya and Justice Geeta Gopi termed the act as inhumane and a gross violation of human rights. Based on the words of Mother Teresa, the bench said that human rights are not a government privilege but an innate human right.
He further said that the police officers blatantly disregarded the human rights of the complainants and behaved as if they had the privilege to do so. He further cautioned that those entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining law and order should not compromise on civil liberties.
