Fire at Iraq’s Kurdistan’s Soran University Hostel Kills 14

At least 14 people have been killed and 18 injured in a fire at a university hostel in Iraq’s northern city of Erbil. According to Kamram Mulla Mohammad, head of Soran’s health directorate, a fire broke out in a building (hostel) in Soran, a small town east of Erbil.

According to an Iraqi news agency, the fire was extinguished on Friday itself. It is said that the fire broke out due to short circuit. The area where the fire broke out is in Kurdistan. Kurdistan Intejamia has formed a committee in this matter, which will investigate it.

Footage broadcast by Rudaw showed firefighters battling flames in the building, which houses both academic staff and students of Soran University. It can be seen in the video that there is an atmosphere of chaos where the fire broke out. Here people are being saved through Kirna.

State media agency INA, quoting information from Civil Defense, said that the fire on the third and fourth floors of Soran University was successfully brought under control.
