Farmers’ protest against ethanol plant turns violent in Telangana village

Farmers from Chittanur and surrounding villages are opposing the ethanol plant as they fear it will divert water from fields to the factory. However, despite opposition from 14 organisations, construction of the plant was started earlier this year.

Violence broke out in a village in Telangana’s Narayanpur district on Sunday afternoon during a protest by farmers against an under-construction agricultural ethanol plant. Police lathi-charged a crowd trying to stop the transportation of machinery to the plant, leading to angry protesters setting a police vehicle on fire.

Tension prevailed during the farmers’ protest at Chittanur village in Marikal mandal when locals stopped vehicles carrying machinery for the plant. Police intervened and removed the protesters. This led to a fight between the two parties. After this the police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the protesters.

Angered by this action of the police, the villagers set fire to a police vehicle and started pelting stones, in which a police officer was injured. Police have sent additional forces to the village to control the situation. Top police officers are camping at the spot. There is tension in the village.

Farmers from Chittanur and surrounding villages are opposing the ethanol plant as they fear it will divert water from fields to the factory. Residents of Chittanur, Eklaspur and Jinnaram villages also fear that the ethanol plant of Jurala Organic Farms and Agro Industries Ltd will cause pollution in the area. However, despite opposition from 14 organisations, construction of the plant was started earlier this year.
