Eight devotees killed after wall collapses at Andhra’s Simhachalam Temple

The Endowments Minister has ordered an inquiry into the incident. He said that necessary steps will be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents. The minister said that the government will provide all possible help to the families of the victims.

Eight devotees were killed and four others injured when a wall collapsed during the annual festival at Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple in Simhachalam in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday morning. The accident occurred due to the wall collapse caused by heavy rains.

The wall collapsed on devotees standing in queue to buy tickets for darshan during the annual festival Chandnotsavam, which begins on Wednesday. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel reached the spot and started rescue operations with the help of police and other departments. Officials said eight bodies were recovered from the debris and rushed to King George Hospital. The deceased include five men and three women.

The injured have been admitted to the hospital. Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha, Visakhapatnam District Collector MN Harendheera Prasad and Police Commissioner Shankar Brat Bagchi are monitoring the rescue operation. The incident occurred a few hours before the start of the temple’s annual festival Chandnotsavam. According to officials, devotees standing in queue to buy tickets worth Rs 300 were killed or injured when the wall collapsed.

The state government has ordered a high-level probe into the incident and announced all possible help to the affected families. More than two lakh devotees were expected to visit for ‘Nijarupa Darshanam’. The rituals were to begin early in the morning.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has expressed grief over the tragedy. He expressed his condolences to the families of those killed in the incident.

The Chief Minister spoke to the District Collector and SP about the situation there. He directed the officials to provide the best treatment to the injured. The Chief Minister is reviewing the situation from time to time.

Environs Minister Anam Rama Narayana Reddy has also expressed grief over the incident. He said that immediately after receiving information about the wall collapse, he directed the officials to launch rescue operations. The minister said that NDRF personnel and ambulances have been pressed into service for the rescue operation. The state Home Minister reached the spot. She is monitoring the relief and rescue operation.

Former Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party President YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed deep grief and sorrow over the tragic death of the devotees. Terming it a heart-rending incident, he said it was extremely sad that devotees who had come to see the divine form of the Lord had to lose their lives in such a tragic manner.

YS Jagan urged the government to ensure the best possible medical treatment for those injured in the accident. He also appealed to the officials to provide all possible help to the families of the deceased.

Chandanotsavam- is the annual festival of Simhachalam temple in which the sandalwood paste is removed from Lord Narasimha Swamy once a year and then devotees see him in his ‘Ni Roop’. It is considered extremely auspicious and rare.
