Several earthquakes recorded in November

On November 26th, a 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck Sibi, with a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. According to the NSMC, its epicenter was about 60 kilometers northeast of Sibi. The tremors did not last long, and no damage was reported. Earlier in November, mild tremors were also felt in several parts of the province. On November 8th, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) Seismic Centre reported a 5.0 magnitude earthquake in Ziarat and surrounding areas. Its epicenter was 67 kilometers northeast of Quetta.

Earthquake struck Ziarat in 2008

The last major earthquake in Ziarat occurred in 2008, killing more than 200 people and injuring nearly 500. Entire villages were devastated. Hundreds of homes and government buildings were reduced to rubble, leaving more than 15,000 people homeless. The worst damage was in the smaller areas of Ziarat, where approximately 170 people died, a large number of whom were women and children. Loss of life and property was also reported in other districts, including Pishin, Bolan, Chaman, and Quetta.

Balochistan is an earthquake-prone region

Pakistan has long been vulnerable to natural disasters. An earthquake in northern Pakistan in 2005 killed approximately 73,000 people, while a devastating earthquake in Quetta in 1935 killed nearly 30,000. According to experts, Balochistan is a highly seismically active region because it is located where the Indian tectonic plate collides with the Eurasian plate. Despite being the country’s largest province, Balochistan’s sparse population and remote areas make relief and rescue operations particularly challenging.
