Five people sleeping on a footpath near Shiva Camp in southwest Delhi’s Vasant Vihar area were injured when a drunk Audi car driver allegedly ran over them, an official said on Saturday.
They included two couples and an eight-year-old girl, he said. The incident took place around 1:45 am on July 9 and the car driver, Utsav Shekhar (40), was apprehended, he said.
His medical report confirmed that he was drunk at the time of the incident, the official said. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment even before the authorities reached the spot.
The victims have been identified as Ladhi (40), her eight-year-old daughter Bimla, her husband Sabami alias Chirma (45), Ram Chandra (45) and his wife Narayani (35), all residents of Rajasthan. Police said legal action has been initiated against the accused.
How did the accident happen?
According to a woman who witnessed the incident, about 15 people were sleeping on the footpath when a white Audi car came at a high speed and crushed the sleeping people. After the accident, the driver tried to escape, but collided with a truck ahead. The collision was so severe that the car was badly damaged.
The victims used to make a living by begging
According to the police, all the injured are residents of Rajasthan. These include Ladhi (40), his eight-year-old daughter Bimla, husband Sabami alias Chirma (45), Ramchander (45) and his wife Narayani (35). All the victims make a living by working as laborers and begging.
The DCP (South West) said that the injured people were taken to the hospital on time and at present everyone’s condition is stable. He said, ‘Given the seriousness of the incident, the case is being investigated from every angle. CCTV footage is being scanned and efforts are being made to know the exact circumstances at the time of the accident.
