Doctors said that there is a significant increase in the cases of ‘stomach flu’ in Delhi. ‘Stomach flu’ also known as viral gastroenteritis is a common illness caused by various viruses including norovirus, rotavirus and enterovirus. These viruses are highly contagious and can spread easily through contaminated food or water, close contact with an infected person, or poor hygiene.
Dr Vandana Garg, Senior Consultant Internal Medicine, Max Hospital Vaishali, said, “In recent times, there has been a significant increase in the number of patients coming to us in the OPD for cases like flu, diarrhoea, viral fever etc, which is higher than expected. According to him, it is 20 percent to 30 percent more.
Its major symptoms include stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting. Health experts have advised patients not to take antibiotics.
C.K. Dr Rajeev Gupta, director of internal medicine at Birla Hospital, Delhi, told IANS: “Stomach flu cases are becoming more common; they usually resolve on their own within a few days. But antibiotics will not have much effect on it. It should not be used unless a bacterial infection is present. The doctor said he is seeing an average of 6-7 cases every day.

Dr. Vandana said that people suffering from problems like diabetes and high blood pressure are also at risk.
Doctors called for a number of precautions to prevent the spread of the virus, including maintaining a healthy diet, washing hands frequently, avoiding crowded places, wearing masks and avoiding contact with sick individuals.
