The violent incident that took place late Friday night at Kalkaji temple in south-east Delhi shook the entire area. Yogendra Singh, a 35-year-old sevadar who had been serving in the temple for a long time, was allegedly beaten to death by some people. Police said that one of the attackers in this case has been caught with the help of local people, while the search for other accused is on.
According to officials, the incident took place around 9:30 pm, when the police control room received information about a fight at Kalkaji temple. Initial investigation revealed that the accused, who had come to visit the temple, asked Yogendra Singh for ‘chunni-prasad’ (chunri and prasad). During this time the dispute escalated so much that the accused attacked Singh. The dispute took a violent turn and the group punched Singh and beat him brutally with sticks.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Hemant Tiwari said that seriously injured Yogendra Singh was immediately taken to AIIMS Trauma Center, where he died during treatment. According to the police, Yogendra Singh was a resident of Hardoi district of Uttar Pradesh and was serving at the Kalkaji temple for the last 14-15 years.
The police have registered a case in this case under sections 103 (1) (murder) and 3 (5) (joint liability) of the Indian Penal Code (BNS). Officials said that the arrested accused has been identified as Atul Pandey (30), a resident of Dakshinpuri, who was caught by the locals on the spot and handed over to the police.
At present, several police teams have been deployed to identify and arrest the remaining accused. The police have assured that all the accused involved in this heinous crime will be brought to the clutches of law soon.
