Panic has gripped the Delhi Legislative Assembly following a threat to blow up the building. The threat was conveyed via email. Upon receiving the information, security agencies were put on high alert, and teams of sniffer dogs along with an anti-explosives squad were deployed within the Assembly premises. As a result of this incident, the proceedings of the Budget Session—originally scheduled to commence at 11:00 AM—began approximately half an hour late.
According to the office of Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, the first threat was received at the Assembly’s official email address at 7:28 AM. Approximately 21 minutes later, at 7:49 AM, the Speaker received another threatening message. Both messages claimed that explosions would be triggered at the Delhi Legislative Assembly at 1:11 PM and at a Delhi Metro station at 9:11 PM. The messages also made reference to the ‘Khalistan Referendum.’
Following the receipt of the threats, the anti-explosives squad initiated a thorough search of the entire premises, including the Speaker’s office. Official sources within the Assembly have also confirmed the receipt of these threatening messages. It has been reported that similar threatening messages have also been sent to other prominent figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Delhi’s newly appointed Lieutenant Governor, Taranjit Singh Sandhu.
The Delhi Police stated that the explosives detection team has conducted a comprehensive search of the Assembly premises; however, no suspicious objects have been found so far. The police are investigating the matter with utmost seriousness, and efforts to identify the sender of the messages are currently underway.
