On Monday morning in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, a minor dispute over overtaking took a tragic and dangerous turn. In Johri village, under the jurisdiction of the Rajpur police station, an altercation that began between the occupants of two cars suddenly escalated into a shootout, claiming the life of an innocent bystander—Brigadier Joshi—who was out for his morning walk.
According to the police, the control room received a report of gunfire in the Johri village area at approximately 6:50 AM. Upon receiving the information, the Rajpur police force and senior officials immediately rushed to the scene and inspected the site of the incident.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a dispute regarding overtaking had arisen on the Mussoorie road, near Malsi, between the occupants of a Delhi-registered Fortuner and a Scorpio. As the dispute escalated, the occupants of the Scorpio chased the Fortuner and began firing at its tires in an attempt to force it to stop. During this exchange of fire, Brigadier Joshi, who happened to be passing by while on his morning walk, was struck by a bullet. He was immediately rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
During the incident, the Fortuner went out of control and crashed into a roadside tree near the Government Primary School in Johri village. Subsequently, the accused individuals in the Scorpio assaulted the occupants of the Fortuner and also vandalized the vehicle. Two other individuals traveling in the Fortuner sustained injuries in this incident and are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
After committing the crime, the accused fled the scene. The police have set up roadblocks across the entire district, and an intensive search for suspicious vehicles is underway. Additionally, efforts are being made to identify the accused by examining footage from surveillance cameras installed in the surrounding area.
